鈥淪tated Preference Survey of Pedestrian Street Crossing Preferences鈥 (Funded by the Florida Department of Transportation)

Busy streets are a known barrier to pedestrians, in some cases discouraging pedestrian trips altogether. This study aims to compare different street crossing designs and quantify the effect of various street crossing features 鈥 such as the number of lanes or the number of turning vehicles crossing the pedestrian鈥檚 path 鈥 on deterring pedestrian street crossings. The goal is to design future pedestrian crossings in a way that minimized the barriers to pedestrian travel.

The study uses a series of paired comparisons portrayed through simulated videos of pedestrians crossing busy intersections. Simulations were constructed by Graduate Research Assistant Mary Asumang using VISSIM traffic simulation software. The research team also thoroughly examined different ways of portraying urban street environments before deciding upon simulated videos. Bryan McConnell, M.B.A, is a Faculty Research Associate and Computer Systems Analyst for the听Deapartment听of Urban and Regional Planning.听 He has an MBA in International Business from 麻豆精品视频 (FAU) and is finishing a second Master鈥檚 degree in Information Technology and Operations Management.听 Mr. McConnell joined 麻豆精品视频from the early childhood education industry where he worked in IT support and database management for hundreds of schools geographically dispersed across the US.听 Prior to education, Mr. McConnell worked in the telecommunications industry with a focus on applications development and database creation.听 He created and supported applications to enable the company鈥檚 primary task of laying fiber optic cables for corporate and residential customers.听 Mr. McConnell is working to utilize technology to meet the educational needs of students while preparing for technological changes in the Urban and Regional Planning field.听
