Strategic Framework: News & Events Architecture

The News & Events section (/news-events/) serves as the central hub for dynamic storytelling, upcoming activities, and community engagement across all 10 colleges and the Division of Research.

1. Section Structure & Layout Hierarchy

The main landing page at /news-events/ is a unified list page designed for visual consistency across every 麻豆精品视频college property. To ensure institutional alignment, page components follow a strict top-to-bottom layout hierarchy:

  1. News Component (Always First): Displays the latest 9 news articles in a carousel across the top of the page. A primary call-to-action ("View All") redirects users to the main news directory at [college-slug]/news/.

  2. Events Component (Always Second): Displays the next 6 upcoming events. A primary call-to-action ("View All") redirects users off-site to the central university calendar at calendar.fau.edu .

  3. Custom Events & High-Impact Gatherings (Third, Optional): Promotes major institutional initiatives (e.g., annual summits, conferences, signature fundraisers) that require dedicated landing pages beyond standard calendar listings.
  4. Podcasts Feed (Fourth, Optional): Renders the latest episodes if the college or division produces active audio/video series.

  5. Social & Multimedia Feeds (Fifth, Optional): Integrates live social media walls, secondary video channels, or custom feeds directly below podcasts.

2. Strategic Distinctions: News vs. Events

To protect site governance, search optimization, and user experience, content managers must strictly observe the operational boundaries between news storytelling and event promotion.

A. News Standards (Modern Campus CMS)

news

  • Purpose: Long-form, evergreen storytelling with a extended shelf life (e.g., faculty research breakthroughs, major grant awards, donor impact stories, student achievements).

  • Prohibited Content:

    • No Event Promotion: News articles must never be used to invite people to upcoming events, register for webinars, or announce temporary dates. Any item with an expiration date belongs in the Events engine.

    • No Short Status Updates: Brief announcements or quick notices belong on official social media channels, not as web news articles.

  • Archival Importing: Important historical news stories may be loaded into the new system as long as they meet the long-form evergreen criteria.

  • Photography & Image Rules: Images must be purely photographic. Never include text, dates, names, or graphic overlays on news imagery. Automated cropping across mobile, tablet, and desktop viewports will cut off typography and render images illegible.

news component

  1. See All Button: Since the component only shows the most recent 9 articles, when users click to read all news, where do you want them to be directed?
  2. News Path Override: All news is in /[college-slug]/news, or for the main university site, simply /news/, where do you want to pull the feed from?
  3. Tag Filter: If the news is on a department or division page, and you only want to show news from your department or division, enter the tag you use here and only that news will be displayed.听

News Feed & Tagging (Modern Campus CMS)
  • Central Directory Root: All college news articles reside in the central CMS directory under [college-slug]/news/.
  • Mandatory Template: Editors must use the official News Blog Template in Modern Campus CMS to enable metadata tagging.
  • Tag-Based Syndication: Articles can be tagged by department, research topic, student club, or institute. Content managers can then place the News Feed Component on any departmental page and filter by tag to display localized news automatically.

B. Events Standards (Localist Engine)

events

  • Purpose: All time-sensitive, date-driven activities, gatherings, workshops, deadlines, and social functions (whether in-person, online, or hybrid).

  • No Format Separation: Events are co-mingled in a single unified list rather than split by delivery method (online vs. in-person), as formats frequently overlap.

  • Photography & Image Rules: Same as news鈥攕trictly photographic images with zero text overlays.

How-To: Setting Up Your Department Event Feed

All university events are published and managed in the central Localist calendar system. Content managers can filter these central events to display a customized, real-time feed on any college or department page by creating an include file.

  1. Visit the Localist Admin Portal: Log into the university's central Localist Calendar Admin dashboard.

  2. Filter Events by Department or Tag: Select your specific department, college, or metadata tag from the filter menu to narrow down the calendar feed to your unit's events.

  3. Set Display Count to 3 Items: Adjust the feed display limit to show exactly 3 items to maintain optimal page length and layout balance.

  4. Copy Feed Code to Your Include File: Copy the generated feed code snippet from Localist and paste it into your unit's event include file located in your /_includes/ directory (e.g., [department-slug]/_includes/events.inc).

  5. Add the Include Component to the Page: Open your target page in Modern Campus CMS, open the Component Library, and insert the Include Component where you want the events section to appear.

  6. Enter Path to Your Calendar Include File: In the component settings modal, enter the relative file path to your newly updated calendar include file and save your changes.

Centralized Event Management (Localist)
  • Single Source of Truth: All university events are managed exclusively inside Localist , FAU鈥檚 enterprise event calendar platform ( calendar.fau.edu ).
  • Tag-Based Embedding: Events are tagged by academic unit or topic within Localist. Embedded Event Feed Components pull live feeds directly onto college and department web pages based on those tags.
  • Strict Prohibition of Localized Event Pages:

C. Custom Events & Event Sub-Page Guidelines

custom events

While standard campus activities feed directly from the central Localist calendar, major standalone events鈥攕uch as multi-day summits, annual conferences, symposia, or events requiring table sponsorship, vendor registration, or ticket purchases鈥攃an be created manually as custom event pages.

1. Placement & Directory Architecture
  • Centralized Location Rule: All event sub-pages must always be published within the /news-events/ directory (e.g., /news-events/[custom-event-name]/).

  • Prohibition of Departmental Event Pages: Individual academic departments and administrative divisions must never publish event pages within their own subdirectories. Storing events locally creates orphaned, outdated pages once the event passes.

  • Single-Location Management: Centralizing all event detail pages under /news-events/ ensures a single, standardized event repository across every college site that is easy to manage, audit, and clean up.

2. Manual Event Cards & Display Component

Custom events that do not exist in the Localist calendar can be surfaced below the main Localist Events feed on your page using a standard card listing component:

  • Card Elements: Include an high-quality photo/graphic (if available), a concise event headline, the event date/time, a 1-sentence summary description, and a direct link to the custom detail page.

  • Manual Lifecycle Management: Unlike Localist events鈥攚hich automatically archive when passed鈥攎anually entered cards must be manually removed from the listing page once the event concludes.

3. Annual Event Lifecycle Strategy
  • Unpublish Instead of Delete: For recurring annual events (e.g., yearly galas, annual research symposiums), unpublish the event page in Modern Campus CMS after it concludes rather than deleting it.

  • Year-Over-Year Efficiency: Retaining unpublished event nodes allows content managers to easily update dates, speaker bios, and registration forms the following year and republish鈥攕aving time while preserving consistent URL structures and historical data.

D. Podcast Feed Integration & Page Hierarchy Guidelines

podcasts

In addition to written news and calendar events, colleges and departments can feature an embedded podcast feed on their News & Events landing page.

Technical Setup via Include Files

Because different academic and administrative units utilize various podcast hosting platforms, the 麻豆精品视频design system accommodates virtually any standard podcast RSS or iframe feed.

  • Save to Includes Directory: Obtain your platform's embed code or feed snippet and save it as a podcast include file within your unit's /_includes/ directory (e.g., [college-slug]/_includes/podcast-feed.inc).

  • Insert via Include Component: Open your News & Events page in Modern Campus CMS, insert an Include Component at the bottom of the page, and select your podcast include file.

  • Help Desk Triage for Custom Embeds: If your podcast hosting provider requires custom formatting or does not render correctly upon save, submit a support ticket to the IT Web Development Team for technical assistance.

E. Social Media Feed Integration & Complete Page Hierarchy

Colleges and departments can optionally feature an embedded social media feed (such as Instagram, X, or LinkedIn) on their News & Events landing page to showcase real-time student engagement and 麻豆精品视频.

Technical Setup via Include Files

The 麻豆精品视频design system allows content managers to embed third-party social widgets or API engine feeds seamlessly using the standard include workflow:

  • Save to Includes Directory: Copy the embed code or widget script provided by your social engine and save it as an include file inside your unit's /_includes/ directory (e.g., [college-slug]/_includes/social-feed.inc).

  • Attach via Include Component: In Modern Campus CMS, place an Include Component at the bottom of your News & Events page layout and link it directly to your social feed include file.

  • Automatic Rendering: Once saved and published, the feed will dynamically render your live social content directly onto the page without requiring manual updates.

Division Of University Communications

The Division of University Communications functions as an internal agency that works to enhance the University's public image, strengthen the 麻豆精品视频brand, and help our colleagues tell the story of their individual units in a professional and impactful manner.
