2027 Indian River Lagoon Symposium
2027 Abstract Submission Is Now Open!
Abstract submissions for the 2027 IRL Symposium are now open!
This year鈥檚 theme, Sentinels of the Lagoon: Species, Habitats, and Signals of Change, explores the species, habitats, and signals that help us understand the health and changing conditions of the Indian River Lagoon. We invite you to share your research, management, activities, and ideas.
Submission Deadline: November 23, 2026
Please Note: Registration for the 2027 IRL Symposium is required before you can submit an abstract.
The Indian River Lagoon Symposium (IRLS) is a multi-institutional, multi-agency effort one-day event hosted annually at 麻豆精品视频Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. Since 2012, the symposium has provided a forum for sharing science and its application to the management and stewardship of the Indian River Lagoon. The event brings together scientists, decision-makers, students, educators, and the public to exchange research findings, foster dialogue, and support informed decision-making for the lagoon鈥檚 future. Oral presentations and posters on all aspects of lagoon science are encouraged.
2027 Theme: Sentinels of the Lagoon: Species, Habitats, and Signals of Change
Species and habitats throughout the Indian River Lagoon can serve as sentinels of environmental change. Shifts in their abundance, distribution, condition, and function can reveal broader changes in ecosystem health and emerging challenges. Sentinels of the Lagoon: Species, Habitats, and Signals of Change explores what these signals can tell us about the Lagoon today and what they may mean for its future.

Learn about the mission, history, and purpose of the Indian River Lagoon Symposium.
The Indian River Lagoon Symposium (IRLS) is a collaborative, one-day gathering dedicated to advancing science, dialogue, and stewardship for one of Florida鈥檚 most important ecosystems. Since its founding in 2012 with the support of the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute Foundation, the symposium has served as a vital forum for sharing the latest research and translating knowledge into practical strategies for managing and protecting the lagoon. Each year, the event brings together scientists, resource managers, educators, students, and members of the public with a shared purpose: to deepen understanding, foster collaboration, and strengthen the connection between scientific discovery and real-world action.
Legacy and Leadership
The symposium was envisioned by Dr. Dennis Hanisak, who for over 30 years mentored aspiring young scientists and opened minds to the wonders of the marine environment.聽 Dr. Hanisak鈥檚 vision continues to shape the IRL Symposium, inspiring the next generation of scientists while promoting the research, protection, and stewardship of the Indian River Lagoon.
