Recent Comparative Studies PhD graduate Hassan Pishahang has joined Harvard University as a 2026 HGHI Salata Burke Climate and Health Fellow. The fellowship brings together scholars working at the intersection of climate change and human health.

Pishahang’s work bridges biomaterials, computational design, fabrication, and environmental performance. Building on more than fifteen years of experience with materials and design, his research explores how biological and bio-based materials can contribute to more sustainable, responsive, and human-centered design systems.

As a Burke Fellow, Pishahang will pursue his project, “Climate Responsive Bio Integrated Shelter Systems for Health in Mobile and Temporary Living Environments.” The project investigates how bio-based textile materials can improve conditions in temporary and mobile environments, including refugee camps and post-disaster shelters. His research will explore materials that respond to heat, airflow, and moisture with the goal of improving thermal comfort, environmental control, and well-being for people facing climate-related risks.

Pishahang brings more than a decade of university teaching experience to the fellowship, and his design and research have received multiple international awards and been presented through international design and computational design venues.
