Most of the course will focus on The United States. Topics discussed include but are not limited to: addiction, obesity, epidemiology, death care, pathology, pregnancy, chronic vs acute illness, and long term trends in health outcomes. Through comprehension of course materials and assessment students should: Form a salient and informed opinion on a variety of health care policies. Understand broader trends of healthcare outcomes in the United States. Have the ability to critically analyze topics in healthcare using a variety of sociological paradigms. Course Policies Academic Honesty: Students at 鶹ƷƵ are expected to maintain the highest ethical standards. Academic dishonesty is considered a serious breach of these ethical standards, because it interferes with the university mission to provide a high quality education in which no student enjoys an unfair advantage over any other. Academic dishonesty is also destructive of the university community, which is grounded in a system of mutual trust and places high value on personal integrity and individual responsibility. Harsh penalties are associated with academic dishonesty. For more information, see University Regulation 4.001 at: HYPERLINK "http://www.fau.edu/regulations/chapter4/Reg_4.001_5-26-10_FINAL.pdf" http://www.fau.edu/regulations/chapter4/Reg_4.001_5-26-10_FINAL.pdf Accommodation: In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act(ADAAA), students who require reasonable accommodations due to a disability to properly execute coursework must register with Student Accessibility Services (SAS)in Boca Raton, SU 133 (561-297-3880); in Davie, LA 203 (954-236-1222); or in Jupiter, SR 110 (561-799-8585) and follow all SASprocedures. Conduct: Students who are disruptive or rude will be asked to leave the class for the day. Habitually rude or disruptive students may be subject to discipline and/or removed from the course. Please turn off all cell phones in the class and do not use them during lectures or test taking. Readings: Readings should be completed by the date listed on the schedule. Students are expected to be well versed in the reading material before coming to class. All outside articles can be found on Blackboard or in print upon request. Announcements and Outside Materials: It is the responsibility of the student to keep up with announcements and materials that are provided through the courses Blackboard site. Any changes to course agenda will be given advance notice via Blackboard announcements. Furthermore, there will be a variety of different course materials posted digitally that will be relevant to upcoming quizzes. This will mostly take the form of PDF files for articles that are also available through the 鶹ƷƵlibrary databases. There will also be links to other required multimedia including but not limited to videos, questionnaires, infographics, and interactive charts. Make-Up Exam Policy: Make up quizzes will only be given if valid documentation of an emergency is provided within 48 hours of the quiz. In the case the student provides such documentation, they must make up the missed quiz within one week of the original quiz date. Assessment Criteria Exams: There will be five exams throughout the course of the semester. Each will comprise 20% (80% in total) of your final course grade. Exams will consist of multiple-choice and written response questions. Short answer responses for exams done in class will be brief, emphasizing concise answers. Written portions of exams are to be submitted on Blackboard one week after the multiple choice portion of the exam is given. Attendance and Informed Participation: Student attendance and the ability to meaningfully participate in course discussion will represent 10% of overall course grade. Given that this is an upper-division course, it will be imperative that you can articulate coherent thoughts and opinions on complex course material in an open-discussion setting. In order to gain full participation credit it will be necessary that the student has done the assigned reading before it is discussed in class. Students must also be meaningfully engaged (and of course present) during course time. Your participation grade will start at 100%. Every additional absence after your third absence will result in a 10% reduction in your attendance and informed participation grade. Given that course grade wont be affected until four or more absences, only formally sanctioned university activities and emergency documented by a medical or legal professional will excusable. Course Assignment: There will be two parts of the semester assignment, both will be based on a relevant article made available on Blackboard. There both is a group section and individual portion of this assignment. Your group determined according to the article you choose (or are assigned). _________________________________________________________________________ Group Portion Instructions (Worth 5% of overall final course grade. Will be graded on a pass/fail basis): There will be eight groups with a maximum group size of six students each. Each group will be given a group assignment date and article to present. A: Give a ten to fifteen minute presentation that details your article. Each member of the group should individually present a different aspect of an article. B: At the end of your presentation, you should pose five open-ended discussion questions to the class that are related to your article. Your group will lead the class in discussing these questions. This will end at the instructors discretion. C: Develop five multiple choice questions based on your article that you believe represent key points of the article. These should NOT be shared with the class. For each question, there should be one question and four answer choices for each question. One of these choices should be correct, it should be bolded. These questions should be drawn from information that is both in your article and discussed in your presentation. Only one set of five questions is required per group. These questions should be submitted via Blackboard before the presentation by one of the group members. Up to two questions from each presentation will be used in the next exam after a given presentation. Questions will be chosen by and possibly edited by the instructor. The questions should use the following template: 1) Question a) Incorrect answer b) Correct answer c) Incorrect answer d) Incorrect answer Individual Portion Instructions (Worth 5% of overall course grade, grading criteria to be provided second week of class): Answer the following questions in paragraph form and submit the answers via Blackboard. This is due by 11:59 PM on the day one week from when you give your group presentation. A-What is the contemporary trend in the sociology of healthcare described in your article? You should compose a minimum of 100 words. B- How might this relate to the contemporary trends discussed in the course thus far? Note three specific social trends or course concepts that might explain the current event described in your article. Use source material from either a course text or lectures. This should be done in at least 500 words _______________________________________________________________________________ Grade Composition: Exams: 80% (20% each)- 400 Points Attendance and active participation: 10%- 50 points Group and individual assignment: 10% (5% each)- 50 Points (25 each) Grading Scale: A 94 100% A- 90-93% B+ 87-89% B 83-86% B- 80-82% C+ 75-79% C 70-74% D 60-70% F 59% and below Course Schedule Course material discussion agenda likely will change due to the natural pacing of the course.
