When needed, I may also distribute handouts in class. Course Description This course focuses on the analytical techniques to evaluate operating performance of hospitalaity businesses. Sources of reliable industry data are investigated, techniques of analysis are implemented, and results are applied and discussed in a meaningful capacity. Course Learning Objectives The learning objectives of HFT 4453, Financial Analytics for Hospitality Managers, are: To acquaint the student with how numbers are used in hospitality operations, while exploring different types of analysis To foster awareness to the student regarding key items that are used in evaluating the performance of a hospitality operation and its management. To demonstrate to the student how employee turnover, customer satisfaction, and revenue management influence the performance of hospitality organizations. To illustrate to the student the use of various financial ratios and performance measurement tools in hospitality operations. To discuss and demonstrate the importance of forecasting and budgeting in hospitality management. Student Learning Outcomes (SLOs) Upon completion of this course, students will be able to: 1) Demonstrate the importance of financial results in hospitality operations through use of a profit & loss statement (income statement) 2) Analyze a financial statement and discuss the performance of the hotel 3) Categorize items in a profit & loss statement according to the standard accounts methods for hospitality businesses 4) Distinguish among various financial statements based upon their specific contents 5) Describe the types and purposes of hotel management reports 6) Demonstrate how guest satisfaction can affect a hotel operation's financial performance 7) Demonstrate how employee turnover rates can affect a hotel operation's financial performance 8) Define the concept of revenue management 9) List a minimum of three revenue management tactics that a manager can apply in various situations to improve a hotel's revenue performance 10) List the basic components of an annual operating budget for a hospitality business 11) Define various hotel variables including Average Daily Rate, Revenue Per Available Room, Occupancy Rate, Cost Per Occupied Room, and Flow Through Course Prerequisites and Credit Hours HFT 3003, Introduction to Hospitality Management, 3 credit hours HFT 4253, Hotel and Resort Management, 3 credit hours A minimum of 90 credit hours must be completed prior to enrollment in this course. Additional Course Policies Make-up Assignments or Assessments/Late Assignments or Assessments No assessments (i.e., exams, assignments) may be taken late or as a make up except as indicated elsewhere in the syllabus for approved reasons (i.e., illness or extreme emergency, university-approved absences, or religious accommodations).
