MMC 1540 001 Monday/Wednesday 02:00PM-03:20PM Professor Fred Fejes CS 224 HYPERLINK "mailto:Fejes@fau.edu/954-465-3262" Fejes@fau.edu/954-465-3262 Office hours 1-2 pm Monday-Wednesday and by appointment Introduction to Media Studies (MMC 1540) is the first class in the Media Studies sequence and is a pre-requisite for a number of upper division classes in the sequence. One goal of this class is to introduce students both to information about the history, development and current state of the media. A second equally important goal is to introduce students to a critical perspective that enables them to ask questions about the organization, operation and impact of the media. TEXT: Richard Campbell, Media & Culture: An Introduction to Mass Communication 7th ed (2011) iCLICKER: We will be using the iClicker is class. If s you have not already purchased one, you can purchase them in the bookstore BLACKBOARD: All class material assignments, grades, material etc. will be posted on the Blackboard site (bb.fau.edu) for this class. GRADED CHAPTER REVIEW EXERCISES: For each chapter, students will complete a series of graded chapter review exercises that are available on Blackboard in the Lecture Folder These must be completed by the Monday after we discussed this chapter in class. You will be graded for these exercises, however you can retake them. THE PURPOSE OF THESE EXERCISE IS TO HELP YOU REVIEW AND LEARN THE MATERIAL IN EACH CHAPTER. THE BEST WAY TO GET THE MOST OUT OF THEM IS TO DO THEM WITH A CLOSED BOOK AFTER YOU HAVE READ THE CHAPTER. AFTER YOU HAVE FINISHED, YOU CAN THEN REPEAT THE EXERCISE FOR A HIGHER GRADE. ASSIGNMENTS: Assignments are listed on the class schedule. Students are responsible for all changes made in assignments and schedule. Class grade will consist of Completion of Class Website Profile 5% (50 points) 4 Quizzes 30 % (300 Points) The lowest grade will be dropped. To be taken on line as scheduled. Final 30% (300 Points) To be taken in class during final exam period. Chapter Review Exercises 20% (200 points) Participation/Attendance/Clicker Questions 15% (150points) EXTRA CREDIT Students may give a prepared presentation in front of the class using Powerpoint on a topic relevant to the class material for up to 50 extra credit points. Topics may be drawn from students own experiences, work in other classes or interests and shown how it is relevant to the issues discussed in class. Please discuss the topics beforehand with the instructor. All topic presentation must be scheduled by March 15. A first draft must be submitted by April 4. THE FIRST DRAFT MUST BE REVIEWED BY THE INSTRUCTOR AND APPROVED IN ORDER TO MAKE THE PRESENTATION AND GET THE CREDIT. CLASS WEBSITE PROFILE PROJECT Using Blackboard, you are going to construct a personal web-page which will introduce you to your classmates and create a profile of your media preferences. Go to the Class Profiles/Blogs button on the left column and open up the document Creating a Class Profile and follow the instructions. TO RECEIVE FULL CREDIT, THE PROFILE ARE DUE BY CLASS TIME JAN 12 (THE SECOND DAY OF CLASS). My Teaching Philosophy My teaching philosophy is based on the work of Stanford University psychologist Carol S Dweck who developed the fixed mindset/growth mindset model of learning. Her research has shown repeatedly that a students talent, skill or knowledge is less important than their willingness to make a serious effort and be open to learning new ideas and skills. Her research has shown that students can handle even the most difficult material as long as they work from a growth mindset. My job in this class is to provide you an environment that challenges you and supports you in growing. Your job is to seriously make an effort and be open to learning new ideas Overall Grading Standard A=Exceptional. Not only completes the assignment satisfactorily but demonstrates extra effort, deeper comprehension of the material and ideas and expresses oneself in an exemplary manner. (Generally runs the extra mile.) B=Good. Completes the assignment satisfactorily. Demonstrates a good comprehension of the material and Expresses oneself satisfactorily. Generally finishes the race in the front part of the group. C= Average. Completes the assignment adequately. Shows limited comprehension of the material and ideas. Expresses oneself in a very basic way. However it is evident the student is working hard to understand the ideas in the class material and participate meaningfully in the class. (Generally someone in the middle of the pack.) D= Below average. Does not complete the assignment or does it in a very minimal way. Shows a very limited comprehension of the material and a limited sense of effort to understand the ideas in the class material and participate meaningfully in the class. (Way in the back of the pack) F=No effort. Doesnt even show up or tries to get by with walking the race. Computer use in the class. Students may only use laptop computers to take notes during the class. Any non-class related use of the computer (doing an assignment for another class, internet use, emailing, etc) is not allowed. Students who violate this rule will be asked to leave class. Cell-Phones. All cell phones must be turned off when in class. Students who use their cell-phones during class to send text messages will be asked to leave. NO EATING IN CLASS Plagiarism: Any form of plagiarism will result in immediate failure for the course. Plagiarism is defined as the unacknowledged use of another persons work, in the form of original ideas, strategies and research, or another persons writing, in the form of sentences, phrases, and innovative terminology (Brenda Spatt, Writing from Sources, 383). If in doubt about your citation, consult the University Catalog 2007-2008 or meet with me to clarify the issue. Students with Disabilities: In compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), students who require special accommodations due to a disability to properly execute coursework must register with the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) located in Boca Raton - SU 133 (561-297-3880), in Davie - MOD I (954-236-1222), in Jupiter - SR 117 (561-799-8585), or at the Treasure Coast - CO 128 (772-873-3305), and follow all OSD procedures. 鶹ƷƵHonor Code: Students at 鶹ƷƵ are expected to maintain the highest ethical standards. Academic dishonesty, including cheating and plagiarism, is considered a serious breach of these ethical standards, because it interferes with the University mission to provide a high quality education in which no student enjoys an unfair advantage over any other. Academic dishonesty is also destructive of the University community, which is grounded in a system of mutual trust and places high value on personal integrity and individual responsibility. Harsh penalties are associated with academic dishonesty.
